We’re thrilled to share that BEQUIA has added to her list of regatta victories with three 1st-place finishes out of three races at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in the Spirit of Tradition division. Conditions were windy and bumpy, with what looks like 6-8-foot seas in the photos. This favored larger boats and BEQUIA was the largest in the division. Nonetheless, a win is a win. “Many people came up to us and commented on how fast BEQUIA was sailing,” said the yachts owners. “Design was a lot of it.” “BEQUIA set sail with the latest technology in sails, running […]

The Rising Tide for Floating Communities
By Reed Rowley The concept of the floating metropolis has lived as a science fiction concept ever since French author Jules Verne described them in his novel The Floating City in 1871. Since then, the idea of the large modern floating municipality has been parked on the scientific and engineering backburner. Today there are more people living in Antarctica than in modern floating communities around the world. However, with the twin pressures of population density and climate change causing sea levels to rise, serious attention is being refocused on reimagining and reinventing floating communities as a solution to the challenges […]
Light at the End of the Tunnel For Zemphira
We’re thrilled to share an update on the progress of Zemphira as work continues at full tilt for her to hit the water again this spring. Here’s the latest on her work at the Lyman Morse Boatyard. The Latest: The internal carbon reinforcement frame has been installed around the new molded bottom replacement and keel socket, taped in place, and smoothed and painted. The systems are starting to go in: lithium-ion batteries nested into bays in the carbon grid, each side of and aft of the socket, and collapsible fuel-cell-style diesel tanks in specially-designed compartments within the structure. The new […]
Keeping Up With The Cal 40
It’s been a while since we had a good stir-of-the-pot to get us fired up about something other than politics and the news for a minute. So we figured why not throw our paw in the familiar beehive of that argument for a full re-imagining of a dear, beloved classic: the Cal 40. This isn’t our first soiree into the merits of putting new life into a design released the same year that JFK was assassinated, and the Sabin oral Polio Vaccine was first distributed with a lump of sugar to kids across the US. In fact, we’ve jumped into […]
Boat Renovations and Restorations 101
There’s an intangible, but visceral feeling we get when we hear the rumble of the engine and smell the exhaust of a Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS or view the way the bow of 1962 Riva Aquarama cuts through the water. It’s almost hard to put into words other than to say it’s magical. And despite the best efforts of the modern design world, there’s just something about the classics that can’t be replicated or replaced. Some things simply can’t be improved upon. And in the fast-fashion world we live in, where it seems like half of what we […]
Yacht Philosophy: How to Make Small Spaces Feel Luxurious
As custom yacht designers, we tend to think of ourselves as the original tight space experts. Even on the largest of mega yachts, boat designers think in terms of square inches rather than square feet, always looking for ways to optimize, stylize, and improve the functionality of every nook, cranny, and crevice. And what we’ve found is that even when space is limited, luxury and comfort can still be abundant. It turns out the enthusiasm for living and recreating in smaller spaces has carried over to land life as well. The phenomenon comes with many names: ADU, tinyhome, treehouse, and […]
Sneak Peek of our Victorian Steamship Inspired Condo
While construction photos never capture the full grandeur of a project, we couldn’t help but share a sneak peek of our design work on a client’s custom condo remodel. After partnering with Lyman-Morse to complete a beautiful refit on a historic 42-ft. motor yacht this year, our client made an unusual request – would we be able to do the same thing to their waterfront condominium in Portsmouth NH? The original focus of our design work was rather small – converting an irregular-shaped room into a library that would evoke the feeling of a public space aboard an early-20th-century steamship or […]
