Classic Architecture meets Contemporary Design
Fresh from the studios of Stephens Waring Design, WISP was launched in 2024 as a modern “boutique day-sailer”. As it turns, WISP offers more capability than day-sailing as the design continues a legacy of the Stephens Waring Spirit of Tradition (SoT) yachts. Constructed by Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, ME, WISP incorporates clever, contemporary design and engineering solutions to ensure a swift and efficient yacht wrapped in a traditionally beautiful veneer. A gracefully balanced hull reminiscent of mid-20th-century cruiser-racers — the elegant overhangs echo historically known classic yachts and turning heads in every harbor. The owner’s prerogative and design demand was for impressive light-air performance as well, a wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing as a palatial weekend-capable interior – and that’s just what was delivered. With less than 1,000 miles under the keel, WISP presents a unique opportunity for a buyer to purchase a nearly-new boat at a fraction of the new-build price, and without the build time.

Broker COMMENTS
WISP appeals as a more appealing contemporary iteration of the Friendship 40. The Friendship boats fell short, WISP picks up the slack – the performance is not just impressive but surprising – especially in lighter air where her slippery lines and light displacement work with efficient rig make this yacht shine. The cockpit is a cleverly designed sailing platform– with modern sail-handling equipment to allow for single-handed sailing–all controls easily accessible from a sitting position behind the helm. This is true even for the downwind gennaker as it stands her apart from other boats in this class. What really impressed me was how SWD managed to squeeze in a generous inviting interior with ample standing headroom and creature comforts that any sailor wouldn’t think twice about a long weekend onboard – this is rare in a 39 ft classically inspired design (which often feel much smaller inside than their LOA would suggest). The build quality is exactly what one might expect from a small boatbuilding facility with huge talents in Maine.
DECK AND HULL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
Cold-molded construction utilizing Cedar & epoxy for an efficiently built hull, Douglas Fir for the internal structural frames and backbone. Bulkheads are of Okoume marine ply. The deck is laid in teak over a composite foam-core sandwich type laminate plywood & E-glass that enhances structural integrity and rigidity. The superstructure is marine ply & E-glass.
On deck, WISP offers a sophisticated, dual-purpose cockpit: a plush, upholstered area for lounging forward with a dedicated sailing zone aft.
Guests will enjoy the plush upholstered cockpit seating around a drop-leaf table that conceals wine cooler and glasses storage. Since all sailing controls are run aft of the helm to the ‘sailing cockpit’, this guest cockpit is clutter-free and safely isolated from loaded sheets and lines.
DECK HARDWARE AND RIGGING
Combining moderate draft and generous sail area, WISP is optimized for outstanding performance with this configuration and can shift gears quickly when sailing solo.
The Solent-style rig supports a working jib and a large, multi-purpose reaching sail (each on fixed furlers) to ensure easy of handling and good adaptability throughout a wide range of conditions.
- Moore Brothers two-spreader carbon mast
- Furlex electric thru-deck furler.
- Nitric rod standing rigging.
- Carbon furling boom, electro-hydraulic vang, cockpit lights.
- Under-deck mainsheet system via reverse-purchase hydraulic cylinder
- Harken electric winches
- Push-button control located at helm
The deck is clean and organized. Underdeck windlass and retracting anchor arm keep things tidy up on bow. Sailing performance and enjoyment are essential and sail handling is kept simple– managed via push-button controls at the helm to operate main trim and jib trim.
INTERIOR
Palatial elbow room and standing headroom in both the galley and head, setting the stage for a remarkable daysailing adventure or overnight escape– a luxury weekender, featuring saloon seating for four and a queen-size centerline berth.
The galley is equipped with a microwave, a single-burner induction cooktop, Keurig coffee machine, and a refrigerator/freezer .
Bath: electric toilet and shower, hot water service.
