76′ Spirit of Tradition Racer

FALCON pairs Spirit of Tradition styling with an extensive performance-focused rebuild. Built by Brooklin Boat Yard in 2005 to a Stephens Waring design, the 76′ (23.16m) sloop was originally launched as GOSHAWK. More recently, she completed a two-plus-year, $3 million-plus rebuild at Lyman-Morse, with Stephens Waring Yacht Design directing the program. FALCON will make her debut at the Newport International Boat Show, where she will be available for viewing from 17–20 September.

Much of FALCON’s performance platform was renewed or redesigned during the rebuild. Changes included a new high-aspect bulb keel, high-aspect carbon rudder, carbon keel plug and keel trunk, structural reinforcement and revised chainplate locations. In 2023, she received a redesigned rig comprising an Offshore Spars carbon mast and boom and Future Fibres EC6 carbon standing rigging, together with a new Doyle Grand Prix race sail inventory.

Sail handling is supported by a custom Grand Prix-level hydraulic system and Grand Prix hydraulic winches. The setup was conceived to accommodate approximately eight to 10 crew for racing, while FALCON can be day sailed or cruised with as few as two crew. Under sail, recorded figures include approximately 10 knots upwind, 14-plus knots reaching or downwind and a reported top speed of 16.8 knots.

FALCON has three cabins, led by a forward owner’s stateroom with substantial storage. Immediately aft is the owner’s head with a separate stall shower, while two additional cabins each provide a single berth, drawers and hanging lockers.

The main salon is arranged with port and starboard settees, a custom folding table, pilot/sea berth, traditional butterfly hatch, navigation station, quarter berth and built-in storage. The galley is equipped with a top-loading refrigerator and freezer, gimbaled propane stove and oven and full-size double-basin sink, while reverse-cycle HVAC provides climate control.

On deck, teak decking maintains FALCON’s classic character, complemented by a custom varnished wheel. Practical cruising additions include a modular dodger, semi-hard-top modular bimini, custom aft owner’s bench with heated cushion and carbon-fiber side-boarding platform with stairs.

The rebuild reached well beyond her sailing hardware. Work included a new 9kW generator, lithium-ion battery bank, new fuel tanks, replacement of plumbing throughout and most wiring, new B&G sailing instruments, new anchor, windlass and chain system, new interior joinery and cabin sole, new hatches and portlights, LED lighting, and new pumps and comfort systems.

FALCON also brings a proven recent racing record. Results include first place at the 2023 Boothbay Regatta, 2022 Camden Classics, 2022 and 2023 Safe Harbor Newport, 2022 Opera House Cup in class, 2022 and 2023 Herreshoff Regatta and 2023 Newport Classics. She was also named Spirit of Tradition Seasonal Trophy Winner in 2022 and 2023.
