Canopy House
Design Highlights:
- Inspired by the historic fire towers of the American West — reimagined as a modern, sustainable dwelling that “floats above the trees.”
- Elevated living space rises 35 feet above ground, supported by a cylindrical steel spine and gracefully curved timber columns.
- Slatted wood cladding wraps the spiral stairway, creating shifting patterns of light as guests ascend through the canopy of pinyon, juniper, and pine.
- 420 sq ft residence designed for year-round comfort with premium amenities and adaptable on- or off-grid operation.
- Open-plan interior with floor-to-ceiling glass and sliding doors that frame panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
- Rooftop deck with firepit and pergola designed for stargazing, storytelling, and outdoor sleeping under dark-sky conditions.
- Glass-encased “fishbowl” bedroom allows guests to observe wildlife and night skies from bed.
- Efficient kitchenette and bath optimized with yacht-inspired cabinetry and finishes to maximize limited space.
- Sustainable materials: cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, steel, glass, and locally sourced wood.
- Elevated design enhances natural ventilation, reduces ground impact, and promotes solar gain for winter heating.
- Off-grid capable: solar-powered energy system, local well water, and independent septic system.
- Harmonizes with pristine wilderness surroundings inhabited by elk, deer, black bears, mountain lions, and bison.
